The Truth About Lip Scrubs

Let’s be honest, no one wants chapped lips. And when we have dry flaking skin on our bodies, using a good exfoliator can be a great way to get rid of dead skin and leave you fresh and clean. Therefore it’s perfectly ok to do the same on your lips, right?

Wrong. There are ways of dealing with chapped lips, but unless you use a specially create lip scrub, you could be doing your lips more harm than good.

1. Lips Need Moisture

Unlike the skin on your body which is made up of numerous layers, your lips are what’s called a mucous membrane, and this means there’s just a single thin layer of skin cells protecting them. Therefore, whether you use a toothbrush to exfoliate or an exfoliating product, this kind of abrasion will do more damage than good if the product is overly harsh.

For this reason, the key is to prevent chapped lips in the first place. You can do this by regularly using moisturizing lip balms as well as specially designed lip sunscreens if you know you’ll be in the sun. If you still get chapped lips despite these preventative measures, use these products more often and more liberally. Coconut oil is also a great low maintenance and natural way to moisturize dry lips. Consider applying it at night for a more intensive treatment while you sleep.

2. Gimme Some Sugar

Given the above, you might think that lip scrubs are designed to be delicate, and the good ones are. But, unfortunately, this is often not the case. Fragrances applied to make them smell delicious will actually dry out your lips, and the ingredient used to create the scrub like texture will also likely be too harsh. Any type of synthetic abrasive material will wreak havoc on your lips. But if you still like the thought of applying something to your lips to remove dead skin, a great way of doing so naturally is to use a product that contains sugar. Why? Sugar is a humectant, and this means it will attract moisture. So, you can remove dead skin at the same time as feeding your lips with the moisture they so desperately need. The best lip scrubs are made from all-natural ingredients and are plant-based or vegetable based. The exfoliant material will be sugar.

And if you’re dealing with stinging, sunburned lips, try adding honey to the sugar when you apply it. Honey contains anti-inflammatory properties which will soothe your lips rather than aggravating them. If you find a sugar lip scrub that has honey in it…that’s a bonus.

3. Don’t Be Picky

While lip scrubs can be damaging, something that is more damaging still is deciding to remove the flaking skin on your lips with your fingers. Remember that what lies beneath is hugely sensitive, so peeling away that protective layer will lead you into a spiral of chapped, sore lips. Plus, your fingers carry all sorts of bacteria and dirt on them, which could lead to infection or bleeding.

As such, if you are dealing with a really bad case of chapped lips, opt for a lip treatment which is inherently moisturizing, or even a very gentle lip scrub which will remove the worst of the dead skin, before liberally applying a soothing all-natural lip balm afterward.
